How to clean and maintain your honeycomb natural sea sponge
Make sure you thoroughly rinse out your sponge under running water after using it each time, and let it dry naturally on a clean surface. This will help to keep it in the best condition for as long as possible.
It’s also important, however, to disinfect it regularly – at least once every 2-3 weeks if used daily – to prevent bacteria building up.
Here’s a good way to disinfect your sea sponge:
- Soak the sponge into a bucket with water and vinegar, a 10:1 analogy, and leave to soak for 30 minutes.
- Remove it from the bowl and squeeze it to remove excess liquid.
- Set out to dry on a clean surface, such as the bathtub, or hang out to dry using the hanging cord.
- Use again. The sponge should be as good as new.
Honeycomb – Does it have anything to do with bees or honey?
The Honeycomb natural sea sponge belongs to a family of natural sea sponges and has nothing to do with bees or honey. It is named Honeycomb due its large holes and many channels, which give it a similar look to a bee honeycomb.
Because of these large holes, a Honeycomb sponge can absorb and hold a lot of water. It is also extremely soft.
Contrary to regular artificial bath sponges which consist of closed bubbles, the open holes and channels of a sea sponge make it easy to clean.
Therefore, a natural sponge is considered to be a more hygienic bath sponge, and is recommended for those with sensitive skin.
